What is a brown fused alumina?

Bown fused alumina - is an abrasive with a color from light brown to dark brown. By composition, it is a crystalline aluminum oxide containing from 4% to 7% of third-party impurities, usually iron, chromium, silicon oxides. Among all types of manufactured electric corundums, it is most often used as the most affordable. It has sufficient hardness, strength and abrasive properties for processing most grades of steel and other materials.

Brown fused alumina is produced directly from bauxite, and not pure alumina, by electric melting. In the smelting process, petroleum coke or anthracite is added as a reducing agent, and metal chips are added as a precipitator. After solidification and cooling, the electrocorundum is ground in special mills, sorted into different fractions, from powder with particles of 5-7 microns to grains with a diameter of up to 2 mm. The industry produces several brands: 12A, 13A, 14A, 15A, 16A. The higher the grade, the lower the impurity content and the higher the hardness.
This material has high mechanical strength and hardness, as it contains 47-70% Al2O3, 1.2% TiO2, and ~30% other components. Its microhardness is 1250-2000 kgf/mm2, density is 3.85-3.95 g/cm3;

Physical features of brown fused alumina:

  • melting point: from 1650 °C;
  • microhardness: up to 1250-2000 kgf/mm2;
  • density: 3.85-3.95 g/cm3;
  • consumption during sandblasting: from 3 kg/m2 to 10 kg/m2.

Use of brown fused alumina

The main field of application of brown fused alumina is as an abrasive in sandblasting, the manufacture of abrasive tools: grinding, polishing, grinding wheels, bars, pastes, abrasive paper. Used for:

  • lapping of metal parts in mechanical engineering, watchmaking;
  • grinding and polishing of various grades of steels, including carbon steels, before applying a protective coating;
  • cleaning surfaces from paintwork, cement mortar residues, rust;
  • sharpening of the cutting tool;
  • grinding, polishing of materials with high viscosity;
  • polishing of wood, leather;
  • sandblasting (matting) of glass.
Also, brown fused alumina is added as a filler to ceramic insulators of radio tubes, high-voltage insulators for power supply networks.

Unlike quartz and other abrasive materials, corundum has a higher strength, hardness. During sandblasting, it can be reused for up to 20 cycles. If the processing technology is followed by a normal electric corundum, it is possible to obtain a surface with the specified roughness parameters, to improve the quality of adhesion of protective coatings to the substrate.
