Fused alumina: types and use

Fused alumina (alund) is an abrasive material, has a high hardness (from 1900 kgf/mm2 to 2400 kgf/mm2) and is refractory. The hardness on the Mohs scale is 9 out of 10, second only to diamond, the material with the highest hardness coefficient. Resistant to the influence of acidic, alkaline substances. It is used for sandblasting, making cleaning tools, grinding surfaces of various materials (metals, leather, wood).

Synthetic electrocorundum, like its natural counterpart, corundum, consists mainly of aluminum oxide (Al2O3). The one that is formed in the form of a thin protective film on aluminum products and protects the metal from corrosion, including when exposed to strong acids, alkalis. It is produced by remelting pure alumina or reducing melting of aluminum-containing bauxite in electric arc furnaces. The concentration of Al2O3 is usually between 91 and 99%.

Varieties of fused alumina

When smelting electrocorundum, various additives are added to obtain the desired working properties of the material. Depending on the composition , several types of electrocorundum are produced:

Brown fused alumina 14A (13A, 15A, 16A)
is the most affordable in production, has sufficient hardness (up to 2000 kgf / mm2), density 3.9 g / cm3 for grinding and polishing metals, wood, leather.
Contains 47-70% Al2O3, has an increased viscosity.
Scope of use: electrocorundum treatment of surfaces with variable loads, stripping operations, sandblasting of materials with high tensile strength. Color: light to dark brown.

White fused alumina 25A (23A, 24A, 26A)
Contains 99% Al2O3 and a minimum of impurities, received a white color. It is a refractory, hard (up to 2100 kgf/mm2), but brittle material. it is produced by the method of electric arc melting of pure alumina.
Suitable for sandblasting of hardened alloy steels, stainless steel, production of grinding, sharpening tools for high-speed steel. It is also used for processing glass, wood, leather. In metallurgy, molds are made from powdered electrocorundum, they are deposited on the surface of stamps to give a non-stick effect.
